Yes, I worked in industry for a while testing medicines and then doing cell culture. I then decided I wanted to change and thought I would be in my current role for a year and then go back to industry. I have been working in a university for 15 years now! I really enjoy the variety the job offers me and that I can be working with students studying pharmacy, forensics and even textiles!

I also carry out a science communication role. That works nicely with being a forensic scientist where it is so very important to communicate clearly.

Yes, I thought about doing a lot of jobs when I was at school (Vet, Doctor, Nurse, Paramedic, Forensic Scientist, Psychologist) and I didn’t find out what I really wanted to do until I did my MSc degree and found forensic entomology. I also worked in Industry (microbiology labs and chemistry labs) for a bit between my MSc and my PhD as it took a while to find somewhere where I could study forensic entomology.

I didn’t follow a conventional route into forensics – forensics kind of found me! 😄 So yes, I’ve thought about lots of other jobs. From the age of 12 I’ve worked in sports shops, tea rooms, cafes, and gift shops. I’ve worked for financial advisers, I’ve taught English and Maths to hairdressers, and I’ve been a practical assessor for a removals company. I’ve been both a national and international transport manager for a logistics firm and I’ve managed payroll for hundreds of fruit farm workers across Kent. I self taught Solicitors Accounts Rules and worked for a law firm for many years. I currently work in a hospital emergency department, alongside my studies, and also teach on some of the undergraduate programmes. But nothing has ever ignited my spark like forensics does and I won’t be changing my career path from now on!
