Genetics and Environment play a big role together. Some individuals will inherit good anaerobic (sprint type abilities) or aerobic abilities such as good fitness and long distance running. but your abilities do not just appear, they require influence from diet and exercise. So you need to train and eat well to become fitter and healthier. I imagine your dad does a fair bit of exercise to help him keep fit but it also means you may have the POTENTIAL as well.

Good question EzZzZy – this helps us understand the difference between environment and genes.

Your dad may have been born with the right genetics that will enable him to be fit – for example some people respond really well to exercise and become fitter very quickly. Others (a rare few), don’t respond at all. But. and this is a big BUT, to make the most of his genetics, your dad will have to do exercise to make sure he becomes fit. You may well be the same – born with the right genes, but need to make the most of your environment before you become very fit like your dad. This is an example of an interaction between genes and environment, something that scientists are constantly working on to find out what matters most and how to change things for the better.
