The Big Biology Day fair the money will go to celebrates the life sciences with hands on activities, crafts and displays bringing together a number of biological organisations and individuals under one roof for all the family to enjoy. It gives attendees the chance to try out practical science experiemnts for themselves outside the curriculum whiles showcasing the work of other life scientists and interacting with them at the same time. You learn, you have fun, it gets the family thinking about the diversity of science. Plus it’s in August and the sun will hopefully be out and the museum has a beautiful outdoor space to be enjoyed. The first fair was run last year and feedback was great with a lot of attendees recommending it be a yearly event. So we’re looking forward to a bigger and better fair this year.

At the moment I help to run science outreach sessions for children from local schools and after school groups, but I’d like to use the money to make these even better. We run these sessions to help explain what scientists like us actually do, and why we need to do these things – but more importantly, to show children and young people that they can be scientists when they grow up too! A lot of people think science is too scary or difficult, and I think it’s really important to let young people know that a career in science is achievable for them if they want it and they’re willing to work towards it. So, the way in which I want to spend the money will benefit science because it will hopefully help to inspire a future generation of scientists who might make some really amazing discoveries!

Hi Olly!
Great question!
I volunteer with the Marine Conservation Society. This is a charity that protects the ocean and all the animals within it.
I would spend the money on coming into schools ( like yours!) to do assemblies and lessons to teach you guys how to help protect it!Did you know animals in the sea eat litter, like bits of plastic bottle, and get very sick. Or did you know that a plastic bag can stay in the ocean for over 450 years! How scary is that? We are basically making the ocean into a bin!
With the money it would mean I could come into more schools to teach people how to protect the ocean and animals so that we can all enjoy it for the future!

A fantastic question!
So my idea I want to create an outreach kit. Basically a big strong box of interesting science stuff that could be easily transported to and from schools to help show off the more interesting bits of science. I would look into getting a small projector for presentations, some samples of meteorites/scale model of a space craft as well as ingredients for small experiment presentations which people could join in with, to allow a proper hands on experience.
Its about making sure you have fun, learn something as well as get inspired.
I want to inspire you guys into becoming scientists or taking a STEM career really. You guys are our future.

I agree with everything everyone else has said. The idea is to use the money in a way that will inspire the next generation of scientists. You might be the next Einstein, but unless somebody comes along and puts the idea of being a scientist in your head you might not do it. We all want to make sure that more people start careers in science 🙂
