      I’m not entirely sure of the engineering side of it, but I think that’s because the machinery inside them can’t handle the great pressures that are there in the ocean.
      Interestingly, some oceanographers actually use animal “helpers” to study the structure of the ocean floor – they place cameras on sea lions, who can dive much better than submarines, and access the nooks and crannies of the oceans to which we would not have access otherwise.
