About this Zone

Ecosystems are everywhere. Really everywhere. If there’s more than one living thing in a place there’ll be a system of how they interact with each other. So that’s your classic coral reef or tropical rainforest. But it’s also your bedroom, and the inside your stomach. As Jeff Golblum sort of said: Life finds a way – to mess around with other life.

Just like ecosystems, the scientists studying them get everywhere. All over the world, you’ll find them researching the part each organism plays in the workings of ecosystems.

In this zone, you will meet a scientist who uses maths to find out what makes plants and animals invade new areas, one who looks at how oil spills affect the marine environment and a conservation biologist who studies lots of different animals and helps protect them. There is also an ecologist who studies the behaviour of wild mammals and how we can conserve wildlife, and a scientist who looks at how climate change is affecting our coastlines in the UK.
