I’m now a full-time scientist, which means I spend most of my time running experiments or talking about what we’ve found, so I don’t spend much time studying now. That said, being a scientist is all about learning all the time: so quite often I have to read up on what other people are doing and learn what is new, which I think counts!
When I was working towards becoming a scientist, I had to study a lot. I had to go to university and study for about 8 years to be able to get my job, which is a lot of work. I don’t find studying easy because I am easily distracted, but so much of it was so interesting I didn’t mind too much…
I study every time I prepare for a new project, because I want to find out what other people have done, and whether they had similar results to what I am expecting. I study when I prepare lectures for my students, to make sure they get the most up-to-date information. I also study for fun – I like learning languages, and I also enjoy finding things out about subjects that interest me (recently it has been the American Civil War and penguins).
