When I was in Australia I worked as an Engineering Geologist. An engineering geologist is someone who helps with (mostly) construction projects – from anything as small as building an extension on a house, to building a hospital, school or motorway. This is because any time you build something, the way you build it depends on what the ground is like. An engineering geologist’s job is to work out what the ground is like (is there clay that will squish around; sand that will shift; rock that will be steady?) and what you need to do for it to be safe.

I’m sure you have heard of the old rhyme ‘the foolish man built his house upon the sand…and the walls came tumbling down’? Well that is basically an engineering geology song – if you are trying to build something on sand the ground is way more unstable than if you are trying to just build on rock, so you have prepare a special design so the building won’t collapse. When I was in Australia (specifically I lived in Brisbane in Queensland) I worked on lots of different projects working out what the geology was by drilling holes and taking rock and soil samples, then testing them in the lab so our engineers would know what they needed to prepare a special design, but most of my time was spent building a motorway and bridge called the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges. This was a tricky job, partly because building such a big project is difficult to do (lots of people and companies involved) and partly because most of the time we were working in a swamp – which as I’m sure you can guess is REALLY difficult to build in.

So tl:dr I was working as an engineering geologist, helping build a bridge, in a swamp.
