Antibiotics work by either killing the bacteria they are targeting, or by stopping them from reproducing and spreading. One of the problems with antibiotics though is that because bacteria are living organisms they can evolve resistance to the antibiotics. This is bad because then the antibiotics stop working, and like any kind of evolution, the more pressure is put on an organism, the more likely it is to evolve – so the more we use antibiotics, the better the bacteria become at resisting it. A researcher in Glasgow did a brilliant video using dance to explain antibiotic resistance – you should check it out! ‘Antibiotic Apocalypse – antibiotic resistance explained through dance and art’
