That is very interesting question! So bees (or insects in general) communicate through chemical substances called pheromones (they are odours). There are several types of pheromones specific to each task or message the insect wants to send. For example, there is only one queen in the hive that releases pheromones telling other bees that she is there so they will keep working in harmonious way, while if the queen got older or died, there will no longer queen pheromone in the hive, so that the nurse bees will start feeding young larvae on royal jelly only to rear them as queens to replace the old or the missing queen. Another example is when the young larvae are hungry they will release a pheromone to tell nurse bees they need to eat (pretty similar to a human baby when he/she cries to pay his/her mom’s attention to nurse him/her). Another interesting behaviour is when bees feel danger they sting any invader and this can be human, another insect or animal.
These are only some examples but when you start working with bees you will learn more and feel that it is a very well organised world!
