Heart operations are very serious and risky. They are only done if there is no other option available. However in many cases they can save a person’s life. The most dramatic operation is a heart transplant, which only happens if a persons heart is so sick that there is no hope of recovery.

Operations which require opening up the body are the most risky and the impact is usually a long recovery and risks of complications. The benefit is that the patients life is saved and hopefully their health improved.

With modern technology there are now less surgeries that require opening the body. Instead doctors can perform many operations by running wires through the veins and into the heart. These wire are called catheters and have tools on the end of them to allow the doctor to work with the heart. The benefits of a catheter operation are the same as with open body surgeries, but the risks and recovery time are much better.
