2 Question: What do you get if you mix liquid nitdrogen with mercury? Keywords: chemical reaction, mercury, nitrogen Asked by dynamitefire to Carol, Ellie, John, Philip, Rebecca on 22 Jun 2012.
Carol White answered on 22 Jun 2012:
If you used LOTS of mercury.. a cannonball! Or a really large bullet.
The temperature of liquid nitrogen is much much lower than the temperature needed to make mercury a solid.
So if you dropped some mercury (a liquid at room temperature) into -200 degrees celsius liquid nitrogen… you’ll get solid mercury!
P.s. I really liked this question – it made me think!
Philip Glasson answered on 6 Jul 2012:
Yep.. Solid mercury! but ( go a little colder, and ) you can also freeze air into a solid too 🙂
