The theory of evolution is the idea that animals and plants change slowly (by passing down desirable characteristics to their children) in order to adapt to changing environmental conditions.
But you’re right to question this theory – that’s what makes a good scientist!
The first thing to do, is to look at all the evidence for and against a theory like this. There’s lots of evidence for it existing – such as fossils, living populations and DNA records – and I personally believe that evolution is the best theory we have to describe how animals and plants have changed with time.
But it may not be the full story! So technically, yes, there is a TINY possibility that the theory is wrong! Scientists are constantly discovering new things, or finding things that don’t quite fit with the theories they are testing. It doesn’t mean a theory is wrong – just not perfect. It’s very impressive that Charles Darwin proposed this theory over 150 years ago and it’s still used to explain so much in biology…. and he didn’t even have all the amazing technology we have today!
Extra: If you believe in God, you can still believe that the theory of evolution is right. Only a small number of people that think that evolution contradicts the religious books, and some people choose to believe that God is responsible for the process of evolution in animals and plants!
