Question: is there history involved in what you do as you look at chemical differences in things to predict what the ancient people ate and where the come from ?
Hi
Yes, I work with archaeologists who come and work in our labs to get more information about the archaeological finds they have. When we examine the material (like bones and teeth) we can help the archaeologists to discover what those people may have been eating (for example how much meat they had in their diet) or where they might have grown up (the isotope signal from the water you drank as a child is locked in your tooth enamel and varies geographically – so people brought up in the west of the UK will have a different signal to those brought up in the East). The archaeologists can then use this information to build up a picture of an archaeological site in combination with the historical sources they may have access to.
Hope this helps
Angela
