Animals eat different things because of the way their digestive system works. Herbivores eat plants which are high in starch and fibre and their diets have evolved to digest this. Plants contain a lot of cellulose which can be hard to digest but herbivores have special bacteria in their guts that help them do this. Carnivores have a much shorter digestive tract then herbivores as they are able to gain nutrients from meat they consume much quicker than herbivores can from plants. They also have a shorter caecum which means that they can’t digest plant material as well.

Did you know that pandas are actually classed as carnivores but have special bacteria they’ve gained that allow them to eat bamboo!
