The most difficult coding challenge I have worked on is the CP2K project (www.cp2k.org). CP2K is a program for simulating how atoms and molecules behave, and is over 1 million lines of code, written in Fortran. I have worked on many parts of the code (but not all!) to make it able to run efficiently on modern Supercomputers.
