I chose to work with Rainbow trout because loads is known about them. They’ve become what we call a ‘model organism’ because we know so much about how they work and how they respond to different environments. They’re also pretty hardy animals compared to other farmed species like salmon who are quite panicky fish and tend to just die for no reason!

I didn’t specifically chose the animals I’m currently working on, my decision was more based upon reintroductions (where animals that have got locally extinct in an area are put back once the habitat is suitable again). The reintroductions I’m involved with at the moment are mostly focusing on geckos and skinks as there isn’t that much knowledge on those specific groups but they’re at risk in a lot of ecosystems so being able to use this conservation tool on them could be really beneficial.
