I worked as a bartender for a while. Weirdly enough I use some of the skills I used at that job in science. But instead of mixing tasty cocktails, I’m making chemical cocktails to use in my experiments.

Really odd but I have done many jobs,
trained in carpentry, joinery and wood machining after I left school, worked on building sites and in a joinery shop making stairs windows doors. Worked as a window cleaner, worked in a shop selling furniture and stuff like that.
Worked as a holiday rep in the South of France.
Worked as a back up diver for a dive company.
Finally got a job in a laboratory
I have been training to be an electrician now after 26 years at NHS blood and transplant. 🙂

I worked as a waitress when I was a teenager, and have also had jobs in childcare and as a shop assistant. I’ve been doing science ever since I started University at 18 so my career has pretty much always been in science. Having said that, all the other jobs I’ve had during summer holidays and so on have been important experiences and I’m really glad I tried different things!

Luckily, university in Spain is quite cheap (tuition fees were around £600 per year) and my parents were able to afford my expenses. I have never worked outside a lab. During my 3rd and 4rd year I did paid summer internships in a lab and I also got a scholarship to help in the Cell Biology department part-time during my last university year.
