Shock is a condition caused by low blood flow in the body, which can result in various tissues and organs not working properly. It’s most commonly caused by major bleeding or heart problems, but can also be caused by diarrhea or other things that cause you to lose a lot of fluid. It can also happen after a major, well, shock, such as being in an accident; your body engages its “fight or flight” response which includes widening blood vessels to get more oxygen to your muscles, but if it overreacts this can result in a drop in blood pressure and cause circulatory shock. Usually this is only temporary and so is less dangerous than other causes, but it can still be dangerous if not noticed.
The effects can vary a bit depending the cause and from person to person. The most common noticable symptoms are dizziness and shortness of breath, but since it’s caused by a lack of blood to pretty much the whole body it can potentially cause serious organ failure and even death if left untreated.
