      Hi 🙂

My research just uses people, not chemicals or electricity, so my work does not really harm the environment. But I do recycle my waste paper!

The research I carry out isn’t focused on the environment. In fact it can be quite an energy hungry process unfortunately, due to all the machines we need. For example, we need to store certain samples for a long time, these are kept at either -80 degrees C or even -180 degrees C in liquid nitrogen filled containers.

Despite this we are doing all we can to be environmentally friendly. We recycle a lot of what we use and invest in energy efficient practice wherever possible.

Great question Mrs Simpson, my research is focussed on incurable diseases and we do use a lot of machines and have to store things for a long time as Zach does. But we try to reduce our impact on the environment where possible. We do this by performing experiments to get the most out of the machines in the least costly manner – for example if we can do the processes quicker we use less energy. We do lots of recycling and we turn off power when we aren’t using things – just like we all try to do at home. Loughborough University where I work is very green-thinking, they promote energy efficient practises and reduced carbon footprint practices (car share, bicycles etc), and we are always trying to improve on being more environmentally friendly
