To be fair, my dad wasn’t. He though it was such a waste of time doing a PhD!
Now he knows how much I enjoy what I do he really supports me, even though the distance in between us!
My parents never had much of an opinion about what I did. They encouraged me to wok hard at school and wanted me to go to university to increase my chances of getting a good job, but they were happy for me to do whatever I enjoyed doing most. My mum knows nothing about science as she was a hairdresser but was supportive of me doing whatever I wanted to…..I think now they are quite happy to have a scientist as a daughter though.
My parents have always let me follow the career path that interests me. Neither of them have a clue about science… My Dad is a designer and my mum makes cakes for a cafe.
Everyone has different interests, and I definitely wouldn’t want to be stuck doing something I didn’t enjoy, so being allowed to follow my own career path has been great.
I’m the same as Emily, my parents did not really have an opinion. They both wanted me to do something so I would get a decent job, so I was always encouraged to do well at school and go to University.
I changed my mind in college quite a bit, first I was going to be a teacher then an astronomer, but they always supported whatever I wanted to be at the time!
Neither of my parents are in science, my mum is a swimming teacher and my dad works for a company that makes car parts. I think they’re quite proud that I am a scientist, but mainly they are just happy that I’m happy!
I think my parents are happy I have found something that I enjoy but they aren’t really fussed what is it! I was very indecisive throughout school and I think my career ideas ranged from musical theater star to archaeologist…to be honest although I really enjoy what I do now, I’m still not sure what I will end up doing in the future although I hope I get to use everything I’ve learnt.
