Pretty much all of the surfing in the world happens in the sea and there’s a good reason for this… To make waves you need wind, and to make the BEST waves this wind needs to travel a really long distance over the sea. This distance is called the fetch.
The reason why Hawaii has the best surf in the world is because it is surrounded by thousands of miles of sea so the wind gets to travel a long way, making amazing waves.
In comparison to the sea, lakes are pretty small, so the wind doesn’t have as much distance to make good surfing waves. Having said that there are some HUGE lakes in the world, such as Lake Michigan in America which is 307 miles long. This lake is big enough to make good surfing waves sometimes.
One last point to make is that seawater is more dense than freshwater, so you float in it a bit more easily. This density difference makes seawater a little easier to surf on as well.
