I really hope my job will help people in the future. I hope it means we can all have clean water to drink without it being too expensive. Treating water so we can drink it is very expensive, even though the water we drink is very cheap – my work helps us to reduce the cost of cleaning it, meaning it can be cleaned better, and cost less. It also means we can be less wasteful with both food and water, which is always going to be a good thing, and help people because it means more people can have good food, and clean water rather than some people not having enough water due to drought.
There are a lot of things that scientists don’t understand about our natural environment. If my research can help our understanding of how the environment behaves, then we should be able to to look after it a bit better for future generations.
Well I really hope what I am working on will mean we can move away from using fossil fuels. Petrol and diesel are made from oil and when they’re burnt they release some nasty chemicals and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
We need some carbon dioxide to keep the planet warm but too much leads to global warming. This causes things like floods, droughts and extreme weather to happen more frequently.
If we could use water to power cars which also only emit water as exhaust then that would be both much cleaner, and also stop an awful lot of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere.
That is one of my main goals for my research – being able to drink clean and safe water shouldn’t be something people have to worry about but unfortunately many people all the over the world struggle. My research is focused on designing a system that will provide clean and safe drinking water without the price tag – ideally using things that are easy to get hold of like scrap metal. I’d love to see something I helped design and test out in the field, so by the end of my PhD (which is my 3 year research project) this is my goal!
