• Question: Because a large percentage of the sea is unexplored, why don't people go and see what is lurking down there?

      You’re quite right, there is SO much of the sea that is unexplored. We know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the bottom of the sea. How mad is that!

      It’s only the deep sea that is really unexplored. The surface of our ocean is quite well known because we can look at it from satellites. These satellites can’t look very deep though, so you have to use other equipment to explore it.

      Submarines and robots are used by scientists quite a lot to explore the deep sea, but there are two reasons why there is STILL so much that is unexplored. Firstly, this kit is REALLY expensive because it has to deal with HUGE pressure when it’s down really deep. Secondly, the deep sea is such a huge area that it’s going to take decades to explore all of it!

      If you are keen to make new exciting discoveries in science then the deep sea is the place to go!
