I went back to university six or seven years ago. Before that I had been working as an optometrist but I broke my leg and couldn’t drive. While I was getting better I asked someone I’d met many years before at the University of Manchester if there was anything I could do while I was sat about. He knew about my interest in mathematics and asked me what I though about an academic paper, so I told him and he asked if I wanted to do a part time project on dazzling lights. It seemed better than watching daytime telly for another three months so I said yes. Then whe I was there I was given the chance to study for a doctorate in how people see in the dark. This work was quite successful and it attracted further funding so I get to work on it for another two years.
So I suppose I started because I had a bit of bad luck and then a lot of good luck 🙂
