We are very fortunate to live in the UK where we have the money to invest in technology that will help lessen the effects of climate change on our day to day lives.
I’m currently working on past climate change, but my colleagues who work on modelling the future estimate that by 2080 temperatures may rise 2-3·5°C. Winters will become much wetter and summers drier. Sea levels will rise, and unusually high sea levels (for example during storms at high tide) may become more frequent. Cloud cover in the south may reduce, increasing the risk of skin cancer, Flooding and landslides may become more frequent, disrupting road and rail networks. Warmer water fish such as mullet, bass, sole and bream are already replacing colder water species like cod and whiting around our shores.
I think flooding is the biggest problem for us in the UK, parts of East Anglia as well as parts of the south east could end up under water.
The threat of rising sea levels is compounded by the fact that the UK is gradually tilting. The south east of the country is sinking while the north west is rising.
With holding back the sea a notoriously expensive business, eventually some low-lying coastal areas will probably have to be abandoned.
even the warmer summers are going to cause problems because with hotter weather, the demand for water would increase significantly as would evaporation from reservoirs.
As a result droughts, already a problem in the south during the summers, are likely to become more severe.
Plants are very sensitive to changes in environment so farmers won’t be able to grow the same crops
in the UK any more, we will have to grow things like maize. The list goes on and on and on, I don’t want to be all doom and gloom but it’s something we need be prepared for.
