• Question: how do you collect fossils from the sea bed?

      With difficulty is the short answer.
      The long answer is we take big ships out and drill sediment cores using the same sort of technology that oil companies use on rigs to drill for oil. Once the sedimentologists have looked at the cores, the palaeontologists wash away any sand and clay so just the fossils are left.
      It’s a really great project because scientists come from all over the world to work on these boats and the stuff they dig up, so it really gets people sharing knowledge and discussing different ideas.

      if you’re really interested you could google the “Intergrated Ocean Drilling Programme” (IODP), lots of interesting stuff on their website about what they do, and what the cores get used for!
