As young as I can remember. In a nonspecific way, science is about asking questions. My dad’s motto was always ‘never stop asking questions’ and I was never made to feel like I was being a pest for doing so. Science is exactly the same, except some of the questions don’t have an answer yet… that’s where it gets really interesting!
I do remember some really good science demonstrations at school though, like my teacher making ‘gun cotton’ – which vapourises in a fireball in your hand, another pumping a load of methane into a bowl of fairy liquid, then setting it alight to demonstrate infra-red light (heat) and another burning a jelly baby using an oxidising agent to teach us about calories. I might have a problem/obsession with fire.
We also had a pond at our school too and we were allowed to get little creatures out of it to look at under the microscope, which was terrifying. It was great!
No, I’m kidding: I don’t remember when I started liking science, but I think it was probably when I realised what it was, and that people can work out how stuff works by doing it. I love finding out how stuff works.
