Earthquakes happen because the tectonic plates sit on top of a layer of magma. Tectonic plates are massive, for example, one plate can hold an entire continent! The Magma is constantly moving, and tectonic plates move around in relation to each other. Occasionally the plates will shift rapidly, causing a huge shockwave. This is an earthquake.
