The human brain is estimated to contain 100 billion neurons( that’s about as many stars as there are in the Milky Way galaxy) and a hundred trillion connections. I’ve seen an estimate that puts the human brain at 500PB (petabytes) of processing power – the current fastest computer is 1.5PB so you’d need something 300 times larger.
The power of the brain is partly down to the number of neurons in it, but also due to the vast number of connections each neuron has with other neurons.
Your brain is amazingly fast! Stuart is right; this is because of the complex interactions between many neurons in your brain, and specialized proteins! This is extremely complex and it a very hot topic of research.
