I would spend it on schools outreach work – going into schools to demonstrate the more energetic side of chemistry and physics that you won’t be shown in KS3/4. I think it’s so important that school children get a good taste of how exciting science can be. It’s easy to get over-concerned with school reports, league tables, exams and SATs and forget that learning can actually be fun!
If I won the money I would put it towards an outreach project that some of the doctors at the University run. The project is called ‘X-men in white’ which gets school children to come to the University of Exeter and do some fun experiments. In fact, there is an event taking place this week! I will be going along to see how its run so that if I win the money I will know how to set-up and run my own project!
I would use the money to fund trips for young people from local school to visit labs, and get hands on experience. I would like to allow young scientist to ask their own scientific questions, and design experiments to answer the things which make them curious! It is really valuable to be able to see what it’s really like to be a scientist, and I am keen to encourage young people to become enthused by STEM subjects
