Hi Jana, I’m afraid I can’t answer your question as I don’t know enough about the brain. Hopefully one of other scientists can help you out with your question!
I don’t specialise in brain function either, but I think there are different kinds of storage in the brain. Short and long term storage. This helps to stop you from having information overload if everything was stored in your short term memory! The more you repeat or use information, the more likely it is that it will be stored in your long term memory (a bit like when you try and learn something for an exam, you go over it quite a few times before it sticks). I understand that for long term storage of information groups of neurons distributed throughout the brain are ready to fire up and work together in the same way they did in the original experience which you are storing as a memory. The process of storing long term memories involves physically changing the structure of neurons in the brain. Perhaps one of the other scientists will know more about this?
