Thankfully, in the UK and much of Europe we have strict rules on water quality. Water is monitored and tested before it is allowed to come out of the tap in your home. There are scientists who specialise in testing water quality to make sure it is safe for drinking!
Yes there is a lot of testing to make sure it’s safe. Sometimes something can get through though – last September in the North West there was an outbreak of a pathogen called cryptospiridium, which is very difficult to get out of the water supply. People were advised to boil water or buy bottles, but not to drink from the taps. And hotels were obliged to give out bottled water to customers! That was a rareity though.
