I think out everyone I’m the only PhD student, but with teaching i currently earn around £26/28k a year but I’m still a student! I know my supervisor is closer to £50-60k, I’ve seen other jobs which can hit big numbers with enough experience! Places in the states, like NASA; general electric etc can earn you in the £100k+ region for what you know!
Science may not be a lucrative as say banking but I get to work when I feel like it, i work from home some days, my hours are flexible. Heck my day is like this – Gym – work – lunch/gym- work – home – gym/row. Don’t get that much time in others!
Also, especially in astrophysics, the travel adds up too! I’m off to the states next month for 4 weeks.. all paid for whilst being paid. I’m not complaining with that!
But it’s not just about the money, you have to be interested in what you do too, money isn’t everything!
