Taste buds are cells that have receptors that are sensitive for different chemicals. So for example, when eating ice-cream, receptors that are sensitive to glucose (sugar) will start firing telling your brain that you are eating sweet. When eating chips, these neurons will be silent and other neurons that are sensitive to salt will fire, telling your brain that you’re eating salty food.
