No-one knows! Not only does no-one know, but no-one knows how to find out!

Normally when we want to learn about a star or galaxy or something else very far away, we use a telescope to look at the light that comes from it. The problem is that absolutely nothing can escape a black hole, not even light! This means we can’t possibly see inside a black hole.

This may sound strange but black holes, as far as calculations can tell us, do not have a bottom! They can be looked at in a similar way to the Earth. Our Earth is a 3D (three-dimensional) shape, and it does not have a bottom. What the Earth does have, is a centre. And so does a black hole. Physicists believe that the centre of a black hole is called a ‘singularity’ and is a point where large objects can be crushed into an infinitely small amount of space. Crazy stuff!
