Mars is not a very nice place for humans! If you stood on it’s surface you would notice that it’s extreme cold with an unbreathable atmosphere and intense radiation! Fun, eh?

In order to survive the lack of air pressure and the cold, you would need pressurised and heated buildings. You would also need to wear a spacesuit all of the time to protect yourself from the radiation!

Another important thing to consider is water and food. It would be easiest to produce your own food, as getting food-packages sent from Earth would end up being very expensive! We now know that once some of the harsh chemicals are removed from Martian soil, it’s possible to grow plants there – so that would be your solution to food!

A final, more drastic, solution is something called ‘terraforming’. This means changing Mars itself so that it is easier for humans to live there, for example releasing lots and lots of greenhouse gases (gases that increase global warming on earth) to warm the planet. So there’s quite a few ways to survive on Mars, some easier than others!
