I think my inspirations were from being obsessed with science TV shows and movies like Tomorrows World and Jurassic Park as a child, and later reading books by Richard Feynman
I would say my inspiration stemmed from a background of curiosity – my dad got me a magazine subscription to Scientific American when I was a teenager, and I used to be obsessed with websites like howstuffworks.com. My chemistry and physics teachers were amazing and they really sparked a passion in me for problem solving, which is what being a scientist is all about.
Believe it or not, my ex-boyfriend! I met him when I was doing a classics degree and he was doing a biochemistry degree. I started reading his lecture notes and even secretly attended some of them. He encouraged me to change career and start doing what I actually enjoyed, which was genetics. He has completed his PhD and works in a pharmaceutical company now.
Initially I had an inspirational biology teacher – Mr Dalahay. But once I started my PhD it was really the Prof in charge of the lab. He was Prof Tony Trinci – and was fab because his interpersonal skills were second to none and was interested in all of the PhD students – event though there must have been about 20 of us!
