When I was 12, I had a very short haircut and a fringe (it looked awful!). I was quite sporty and was in most of the school teams, I watched a lot of cartoons, read books, argued a lot with my sisters (I’m the eldest of 5!) and generally was quite quiet. I wasn’t really into science then as I am now, I just worked hard to pass school exams!
I was super geeky when I was 12 (I still am, to be fair). I spent a lot of time reading novels, particularly science fiction and fantasy books (and Harry Potter). As an only child with two parents working full-time I also spent a lot of time playing computer games, mainly online RPGs, and talking to my friends on online messengers and chat rooms. At that age I was building my own website, although now looking back it seems really embarrassing, and learning how to write simple code on my own. I miss being 12!
When I was 12 I was quite shy. I kind of didn’t know fit in but I had a good group of friends. To boost my confidence I joined the schools lunchtime drama club and that really helped as it introduced me to not worrying about what other people think about it. I also represented my school in 400m sprinting at district sports and my school won the competition overall.
When I was 12 I was in ballet school. I went to the local comp and every day after school and at weekends I did dance lessons. I absolutely loved it but did not have any time for anything else.
I was also conscientious in school – doing all of my homework etc as efficiently as I could around the dancing. Consequently, I was also a good student receiving good grades in pretty much all subjects. It was, I think, the start of developing my Organisational capabilities which have stood me in good stead ever since.
