Genetics! Its the one area of science I’ve always enjoyed as I find it fascinating. 2 million bases (letters) is enough to code for a human?! And if you change one letter in DNA you can have really bad diseases?! Just one letter! And even with 2 million bases, the majority of it doesn’t even contain genes but still these bits are important at maintaining gene expression or something else that we don’t know yet!
Neuroscience! I loved it so much that I have a BSc, MSc, and PhD in Neuroscience 😛 I just think it’s really cool how your brain controls every aspect of your body, including things like breathing, or storing memories, or learning how to play the piano. I think it’s fascinating that there are so many different types of brain cells and that they play different functions. It’s remarkable how flexible your brain is, such that if you get a brain injury it’s possible to still walk and talk after that in some cases! There was a guy named Phineas Gage who had an iron rod go through his head in an accident, and he lived – but with huge personality changes!
Pharmacology! Trying to work out how the human body reacts to certain medications and how to tailor the treatment to ensure the correct dose for the patient is not only safe but really effective. I also like translating this knowledge into helping formulate new drugs for the future.
I like physics and astronomy. There is so much about the universe that we don’t yet understand, like what most of it is made of, so there is huge fun to be had in trying to figure it all out.
At the moment I enjoy data science. But I have had a diverse range of interests over the years! Understanding why people make particular food choices is an enduring one 🙂
