An atom is composed of protons and neutrons. A proton has a positive charge (+) whilst a neutron has a negative charge and combined they are known as the nucleus. As with a lot of things in nature an equilibrium state or balanced state needs to be adhered too, so a negative electron (-) rotates (orbits) really fast around the nucleus to balance it. This is the basis of elemental chemistry. The more electrons surrounding a nucleus the different the element. So when you look at the periodic table you can see the number of electrons are relative to the elements number for example Hydrogen (H) has 1 electron, Helium (He) has 2 electrons, Lithium has 3 electrons etc.
