This is easiest for me to answer I think! We all have to eat at least a few times every day. People like me need to get answers so that people can have access to the food that they choose now and in the future (although I do sometimes wonder if we could do a bit more to make healthy choices the easy option!).

When I meet dementia patients and carers through our open days and other public engagement events, they really motivate me to continue my research. I know they’re counting on us to find a treatment for them.

I really enjoy what I do, and do quite a number of different things in a week. The idea of exploring new ideas is always exciting.

The patients :-). All of our research at the Wellcome Trust Centre is aimed at understanding mitochondria and discovering new treatments and drugs to treat Mitochondrial Disease. I am fortunate in that through my work and public engagement work I’ve been able to meet a number of patients with the disease which makes my research more real.
