My first experience in a lab was the summer of my 2nd year of university, so I was 19. I spent 2 months in the summer on a research project, then I continued to stay in the lab to carry out my undergraduate final year research project. That’s the summer I felt like a proper scientist, because for two full months I was working full-time at the lab!
I chose my GCSEs when I was 14 and made a conscious decision to do 3 sciences. But the real choice for me was when I was 16 and choosing A-levels. I could probably have done any subject and following extensive discussion -mostly with my friends – decided science left me with the most options.
Turns out it was a good decision. I have had a number of science careers and have enjoyed them all a lot. I also did (and do) maths.
About 20. I’d always looked up genetic diseases when I was 12-13 and I even made a little book of what genes were mutated in specific diseases. I took separate sciences at GCSE but only took Biology at A level. I really didn’t like Physics and I wasn’t very good at Chemistry! I realised that I wanted to do science as a career during my classics degree, and then focussed completely on science. I tried to get work experience wherever I could, working in labs, spent a year in industry and the NHS and now academia doing a PhD. It’s been non-stop!
