Most throat cancers aren’t genetic but caused by smoking. There are some people with certain genetic mutations who are more likely to get cancer if they do smoke, and some people who appear to never develop throat cancer even if they do smoke. These are hard to determine because they are a group of lots and lots of mutations called SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) which when combined make someone more or less likely to develop throat cancer if they smoke.

My advice would be to not smoke at all!
