I’m currently working in academia, i.e. research in a University. I do love the work that I am doing, but I am thinking of leaving to go and work at a drugs company or train to be a Clinical Scientist with the NHS. Personally, I want to do a job that has more of a direct impact on people. Research is really interesting but it can take a while for an answer and it is very specialised.

At a drugs company I would be involved in making the drug and testing it to make sure it is safe in humans. In the NHS, I would be testing patient samples for any genetic diseases or mutations that they might have that would cause them to be sick.

I would consider working at a pharmaceutical company (i.e. one that makes drugs). It’s still science, and still involves research in the lab, but you can more directly see the impact of your work on society. Working in a drug company is a lot more structured than research at a university, where I am working now.

I change the type of science that I do on a fairly regular basis. Which is part of why I enjoy my job so much. It is the interdisciplinary nature (lots of different types of science) that is why I find it so interesting. And so I guess as soon as I see another type of science that I think could make a difference I engage with it and learn what it has to add…..
