• Question: When do you think Vesuvius will erupt again?

      Vesuvius last erupted in 1944 and the tephra and ash that was erupted in the explosive phase destroyed over 50 American airplanes based near by. Before that it erupted in 1929, 1926, 1906, so yes, I expect it will erupt again, and probably fairly soon. I would guess that you will still be around when it does erupt. None of the eruptions since AD79 have been as large or as devastating, but some have covered all of southern Europe with ash, and twice ash has fallen in Istanbul, which is over 1,200 km away.

      Kate is the expert on Volcanoes here so I would believe her. Personally, I have a bad feeling about 17th April 2019.
