Most people think that life first evolved in places like black smokers on the floor of the ancient oceans, where there was lots of heat and nutrients.

Some of the oldest things we can class as “animals” were something like the sea sponges we have today, but lived over 650 Million years ago. WE sometimes find their remains in rocks in Namibia. Working with a colleague from Manchester, we tried to get a 3D image of one of these ancient fossils, but they were just too difficult to see properly.
