I have never burned myself on lava, although I have nearly melted the soles off my hiking boots! When we work very close to the lava we wear protective clothing (usually just gloves and goggles, but sometimes those silver space suit type overalls). The lava cools very quickly so when you collect a sample using a metal pole or cable, you drop the lava into a bucket of water and it’s cold enough to handle in a few minutes.
