Good question…. working as a scientist means I have to be able to work flexibly. Sometimes this means working weekends or nights for several days in a row. Sometimes this means going away for weeks to visit a volcano in some far flung place with very little notice… so sometimes it can be difficult to agree to go on other trips and visit family. Mainly it means I can’t walk past a rock or a nice view without thinking about how it formed and what it means or what it would look like in 3D!

I always try to find a good balance between work/personal life, but as a working mum this has sometimes been very hard. The nature of my research means sometimes I have to leave the country and go away and do experiments. I’m lucky to have a very supportive and understanding family that have helped me every step of the way.
