  Yes, I have been on volcanoes when they are erupting, but no I have never really felt in danger. Once a volcano is erupting it is usually possible to asses the risks and dangers, and as long as you are sensible and listen to the experts then it is normally safe. Millions of people visit Hawaii every year to see the volcano, and it’s perfectly safe. The closest I have been to lava is less than 1 m and I have been to the active vent at Pu’u O’o (pronouced poo-ooo oh-oh). The photos from those visits are on my profile.
