Charles Darwin was a scientist who studied plants and animals in the wild (sometimes called a naturalist). He came up with a theory of evolution by natural selection and also found evidence for evolution (famously by studying the different beaks on birds). This is based upon the idea that all living species had common ancestors and different species have evolved (changed gradually over time) through the survival of the fittest. That means that only species that have developed the best traits survive, which means they can pass on those traits to their descendants. Bill Nye has a great video explaining evolution here.
